1ozt South African Gold Krugerrand
For decades the Krugerrand was the "gold standard" for investment-grade bullion coins, with production reaching into the millions of coins during the 1970s and 1980s. However, demand was curtailed by international sanctions place against the apartheid government in protest for human rights violations, and production levels subsequently fell to merely tens of thousands each year. Produced annually by the South African Mint, these gold bullion coins depict former South African Republic president Paul Kruger on the obverse and a springbok antelope on the reverse.
This coin measures 32.77mm in diameter and weighs 33.93g with a fineness of .917 for a net weight of 1ozt pure gold. The krugerrand is also available in fractional units of 1/2ozt, 1/4ozt, and 1/10ozt, as well as collector-grade Proof specimens. Proofs have 220 serrations on the edge, while bullion strikes only have 160.
